It was a sunny day of spring 2012, when I was walking down the street in Vilnius with such a thought in my head: “Hey, what about a show of the Scorpions with orchestra in Minsk? That would be awesome, my mother can enjoy the show of her favorite band of youth once again, my friends will be there with me, and we have a very good orchestra, so… Why not?” Knowing that imaginable = possible, I closed my eyes for a minute and tried to imagine this classic collaboration: Scorpions and The Presidential Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus on the same stage; this beautiful, breathtaking sound, tones of rocking energy… I saw everything so well and clear, like I was there already. I saw myself sitting in front of the stage – don’t know why, but right in front of Matthias – and I felt this pure joy which only Scorpions’ show can give. A smile appeared on my face, and I thought: “This is possible then”. One year after my friends sent me a message: “Scorpions with orchestra in Minsk, 19th October!!!”
I couldn’t help crying tears of joy on that day.
The show was announced in April ’13, and so many Belarusian fans I’m in touch with wrote to me right after this wonderful news: “Oh my God, how to wait for all those months, how not to get crazy waiting for this?” I could understand them, because I’ve been at the show with orchestra once, in 2011 (this amazing trip to Berlin will always have a special room in my heart), and despite that (or maybe because of that) I couldn’t wait for this Minsk’s one to happen, myself. A half of a year till this holiday oа life and delicacy for ears! But then, when it was October already, the same people were writing to me: “Do you believe it is already THAT month? Do you remember how we didn’t know how we will be able to wait for so long?” Yes, it was unbelievable. And exciting.
There were some arguments about this show though, especially after appearance of the setlist on the Web. Many fans were a bit… scared when they saw that the last number in the list is “14” – the setlist seemed very short. And others were a bit upset because it was just right the same as it was in Berlin in 2011. “Of course we’re not Athens to make another program for us or even to include one or two new songs… Why should they care?” – those sarcastic things were appearing here and there. But as I said to those who were talking to me about it, 1) the songs with orchestra sometimes are twice longer than their regular versions and one of them – “Deadly Sting Suite” consists of three pieces, if not to say four, and 2) Scorpions couldn’t really work on TWO huge brand new projects at the same time, they had to concentrate on only one of them to make everything perfect, and they chose acoustic one – which doesn’t mean that the show with orchestra will be something not exciting. But in any case, everybody was waiting for the concert. Everybody.
The adventures were thought to start earlier, with the meeting of the band and “chasing” for autographs and photos – and I didn’t want to be a part of anything like that. Not that positive memories from the previous meeting of the band at the airport made me say that I won’t go there again, and waiting for the band if front of the hotel having a chance to probably meet them for 3 seconds – I just didn’t need that. Maybe I’m arrogant already, but as I have all the signatures since November ’11, some photos with some Scorps and some trips to “MJ Guitars” where I could talk to Matthias so easy, without those huge men telling you to f*ck off just because they don’t wanna check whether you’re dangerous for their clients of not and can even beat you… Well, I just wished some good luck to those who planned to go to the airport and to the hotel and was patiently waiting for the day of the show.
But the funny thing happened after I received a call from one of acoustic shows in Athens, while “Follow Your Heart” was performed. I was so inspired and happy, all the bad things that were on my mind just went away, and suddenly I had an idea – to sing this song as a welcoming one to the Scorpions. I shared this ides with my friends and they liked it a lot. So, our awesome guitarist Natasha watched some videos from Athens to catch the music and the mood of the song, and re-wrote it for two guitars with a small solo! I was just amazed when I head that, and said: “I hope you won’t be ashamed because such untalented singer is singing while such talented guys are playing…” I really hoped I could do my part well, too. Just a couple of days I say that I won’t go to airport anyway, and now I’m preparing to sing a song there! Wow!
So, the day before the “Day X” me, Natasha and Kirill (my awesome friends and the guitarists of my band) gathered together to make a great rehearsal – it was necessary as never because we didn’t have an opportunity to do it live before, because I was in Vilnius those days. There was our bass-player Ania with us, though she was just a looker-on, the same as our guests from the Ukraine and Russia, Valentyna and Tatiana. So we had a great company there, I was warming up my voice hugging my best friends’ girlfriend – his Explorer I brought him from Munich, others were drinking tea and joking. I felt that they all were nervous, but wanted to hide it – we all waited for tomorrow as a big day. And – “Follow Your Heart” was played and sung about 50 times, with jokes, some failures and applauses from our “audience” sitting on the couch =) After that guys started to play random Scorpions’ stuff and I was singing with it – it was like a jam, and went out so great that our guests said: “What for do we need a show in a day? We have such an amazing show right now!” =) So, the mood was excellent!
Some pictures from Tatiana, so you can imagine this:
Tough everyone was tired and we had to wake up early, we couldn’t really fall asleep for long time. I loved with my friend Ania those days, because I didn’t want to come back to my flat before the show: I had a lot of problems before I camу to Minsk and I just knew that the energy of my Minsk’s flat will kill me and I won’t be abler to go anywhere, including the show. So I asked Ania if I can stay at her place and she saved me with her positive answer. But we weren’t alone in the room, there was Valentyna also – what a great company! So it was something like I have at my student’s hostel now: three girls in the same room =) So, we tried to fall asleep, joking and telling some silly thing to each other. It all ended with a fairy-tale from Ania and Valentyna about two gnomes named James and Matthias who lived in a giant’s pocket, and with my “If anyone will tell anything again I will throw a pillow into her face!” So, somehow we calmed down and fell asleep.
The morning began… early. I was sleepy, but I had no time to think about that: I had to get up, take a shower, meet another one Dasha who wanted to sing with us so much so she could practice with us a bit (she is from Russia and arrived early in the morning) and yes, to sing “Follow Your Heart” some more times again. So, I caught this amazingly beautiful girl with awesome voice not far away from the house and brought her to “Anna’s Pub”, how we call Ania’s flat sometimes. Soon our guitarists joined us, and Ania’s room turned into a practicing one.
One more short rehearsal:
Then everyone headed to the bus-station to catch the bus to the National Airport. And right there I see a familiar face… oh my God, NADIA?! I couldn’t do anything but run to her and hug! She could make it to Minsk, though she almost gave up on that thought! I was so happy to see her again, and was so happy to understand that she will be at the show tomorrow! “It was just the last moment – I literally jumped into the train and… here I am!” – she said with a happy smile. She had a ticket already – the same as some fans who were waiting at the platform with her – so we left them for a while to get tickets for us. In last minutes Tatiana joined us – and the bus headed to the airport. A half of our company was at the back seats, and it was such a pleasure to share this trip with my friends, because they all have great sense of humor and all of them are more or less crazy =) As the craziest one, I was singing some Scorpions’ stuff – Dasha wouldn’t be Dasha without singing!
We came early and decided not to form huge groups, because we all remembered about the warning was given us – nobody wanted to go to a prison instead of the show. But soon we realized that nobody really came to the airport to take us to such a place, so we could calm down about that. My band and some of our friends came to the 3rd floor with very nice armchairs. The guitarists were playing, as always. Hey, do you know how to recognize a guitarist? Just give him or her the instrument, and if he or she won’t be able to hold it without playing it – then you know the conclusion =) And a funny thing happened because of that: when I was away for a while and came back, they told me that some policemen came up to them and asked: “Are you the Scorpions?” Awesome, huh? =)
When we joined the rest of the people at “VIP Gate”, I realized that there are many nice fans came to meet the band, too. I was in a good mood, smiling and singing quietly. Everything was just fine, before a very nice woman came up to us from this “VIP” and asked us about our purpose. We told her that we’re meeting Scorpions. She was surprised, because nobody was thought to arrive that day. But we didn’t want to give up, so she went to check – and then she came up to us once again and said that Scorpions were already there with their crew, late at night or very early in the morning, I don’t actually remember. So, we all understood that we are ultimate losers =) Many people didn’t believe first, but I could see that the woman haven’t lied to us. So… yes, Scorpions are already in Minsk, and we’re here, 80 Km away from the city, waiting for them…
I would lie if I’d tell that I wasn’t upset. Of course I was! I really wanted to perform a song for the guys and to see how they react to that, to catch some warm smiles and positivity from them. But as it was already an impossible action – I had nothing to do but to go to the airport’s bar… no, not to get drunk! =) Just to drink a cup of hot tea! Valentyna was there with me, and I told her that it is very sad of course – to lose an opportunity. But then, the life goes on, and there will be many other great moments ahead, we just have to believe in ourselves and to have positive attitude to life. And the tea was tasty!
After that, some of the fans gathered at the 3rd floor, and we decided to sing a song nevertheless. We had audience – other fans and some travelers – so why not? We recorded it as a video even, and you can see it below if you haven’t yet. Sorry for my tense voice (it was so cold inside and I had to try harder while I was singing) and for missing words in the second refrain. But anyway, it supposed to be played to the Scorpions like this:
Later we jammed a bit again (one traveler even gave us some money for that))) and tried to catch the bus back to the city, but we were a bit late and then found out that we wouldn’t be able to get into it anyway – it was full of other fans. So we came back to the airport to wait another 40 minutes there. And we had a lot of fun there, especially riding carts (before one angry worker came up to us and said to stop that circus). “You know what guys, Scorpions missed so much… We even feel pity for them!” – we joked.
And yes, a funny thing: several times I had to say that I'm married to avoid some men Am I really so attractive, or it's only me beautiful black dress? =)
Then we caught the next bus with two more fans from Russia - Nina and Lena. When we came into the bus, I asked the driver: "What do you think about some live music in the bus?" He looked at me and said: "Just sit on the back seats and then you can sing". So we were singing all 40 minutes we were driving back to Minsk! =) That was just awesome and so fun!
Afterwards we came back to Ania’s flat with Natasha, Kirill and Valentyna to eat my pancakes, so the day was really, really awesome, even though we missed a chance to meet Scorpions and to play for them. But well, the past cannot be changed, and all we have is NOW – so let’s make this NOW awesome!
