Here is my take on this last minute trip to Munich to visit Matthias @ MJ Guitars!
We (My Mother and I) arrived in Munich on July 3rd, we got to the Angelo Design hotel with a 9hr jet lag and couldn't wait for Thursday the 4th! July 4th is USA's Independence day and this was the 1st time we have been out of the country on this date so it was meant to be a good day!
We arrived at the shop Thursday around 11:30am or 12pm and was greeted by Stefan, He is a very friendly and kind person & Matthias is lucky to have him to run the shop! Matthias would show up an hour or so later so in the meantime I messed with a few guitars and talked with Stefan. Matthias shows up and greets us like he's known us for a while! There was only Me, My mother, stefan and Matthias at the shop that day besides a few customers in and out.. We talked for a bit and Matthias invited us for lunch next door. We had a few beers, apple cake & a shot of espresso and talked about everything for several hours. It was AWESOME to hear stories "Straight from the horses mouth" so to speak instead of reading some written interviews. He told us about how he became a Scorpion, The Red with black stripes outfit he wore at the Anaheim,ca concert back in 1982 getting lost & went to the Yellow with black stripes outfit for the next show in San Francisco, he told us about touring with Ted Nugent, we heard about how he got his 2nd guitar and why his explorer is striped. We talked about Hitler a bit, he told us how and why he opened up MJ Guitars and so on.... He is a very well educated individual indeed! He has a good memory too, I asked him about the kids that ran into them (scorpions) in the street on the World Wide Live VHS and he knew right away! He even told us who they played with at the 1982 Anaheim concert.. Iron Maden, Foreigner and Loverboy, I mentioned that I saw them at the Fabulous Forum in Los Angeles in 1983 or so, but I didn't remember who they played with.... He said "Bon Jovi".. DAMN!! He pays attention! So in the 5+ hours spent with him that day I bought 2 guitars (1 for me & 1 for my grandson, Jacob) He signed my grandsons Acoustic and left him a video Message! He showed me a few tricks on guitar, played some acoustic guitar for us, some Jimi Hendrix "Hey Joe"! I was like a kid all over again! My mother an Matthias got along well, I swear, it's we knew him for ever, that's how down to earth he is. Never did we feel intimidated or shunned! We were his guests for the day and that made for the perfect trip! My 1st time hearing the scorpions was back in 1979 or 80, it was my sister's boyfriend that turned me on to them.. Animal Magnetism!!! He's been my #1 Guitarist from then on! Then, within a year my parents bought me a guitar for Christmas, a Peavey T-60, I started learning some Scorps! So, to be a guest of the Man that gave me an influence to play the guitar 33 years later was Amazing! There were so many questions I wanted to ask but didn't want to feel like it was an interview and besides, the good questions came to mind after we left anyway..
We went back 2 days later on Saturday to check on another guitar that I might want to swap mine out for. There was a fan there already waiting for Matthias. I was surprised there wasn't anyone there for this! Only 3 other fans is all I saw the both times we were there. Matthias is much more personable this way! Anyway, we joked around some more, he played a few guitars for me that I was deciding to get, we got to meet his wife, she's BEAUTIFUL!! He signed the guitar I ended up buying. We said our goodbye's and he offered to give us a ride back to our hotel but his wife took the car.. LOL, smart lady! I have pictures & videos of this Lifetime Achievement weekend for me! LOL....
The Hospitality and kindness we were given @ MJ Guitars was unbelievable to say the least! This is what brings fans back from around the world!! Including us! We'll be back!
I'm sure there's lots i'm forgetting but that's it for now.
