I use a Canon 400D. For my nature shots I use an 18-55mm lense, nothing special really, I want a macro lense, but I dont have £300+ spare to get one. And for my live gig shots I use a 50mm f/1.8 II. For band photoshoots I mostly use the 18-55, but if the light levels are low I change to my other lense. I dont have alot of kit at all, probably about £400-450 worth, but it gets me by on what I need it for.
Yeah, theres alot of competition over here right now, so thats a difficult aspect. And obviously with the economy at the moment everyone wants something for nothing! Gigs are the hardest thing Ive done really (other than some specific studio portrait work) I hate using the flash at gigs, but with the 50mm lense I dont usually need it. That lense has been brilliant for gig shots
