justcristy wrote:What camera do you use and lenses for the nature and then the photoshoots and then of course, your gigs. I too am trying to run my own photography business, but with the economy and then living in a small town hinders me from really increasing my revenue. :? But I don't want to stop at just nature, which is practically all I do, I want to do gigs as well.
Anyway, you're good and I wish you much good fortune.

I use a Canon 400D. For my nature shots I use an 18-55mm lense, nothing special really, I want a macro lense, but I dont have £300+ spare to get one. And for my live gig shots I use a 50mm f/1.8 II. For band photoshoots I mostly use the 18-55, but if the light levels are low I change to my other lense. I dont have alot of kit at all, probably about £400-450 worth, but it gets me by on what I need it for.

Yeah, theres alot of competition over here right now, so thats a difficult aspect. And obviously with the economy at the moment everyone wants something for nothing! Gigs are the hardest thing Ive done really (other than some specific studio portrait work) I hate using the flash at gigs, but with the 50mm lense I dont usually need it. That lense has been brilliant for gig shots :)

Thank you very much and best of luck to you also! :D

Thank you, I am hoping that as the year goes on that things will open up more for me. My utmost respect for your photos tho. I really love the closeups!! I do a lot of flower closeups lately since I don't have a car and can't get around to places I would love to go. I did get big horn sheep the other day tho when my girl, Kim, came into town and we went up to the mountains.

WOW!!! :D Looks like this thread is right up my alley :D

I'm an amateur photographer and, like Roberta, I want to become a professional photographer one day.

I shoot exclusively in digital.

Here is the gear I use:

10.2MP Sony Alpha A200 Digital SLR (my baby)
Lenses: Sony 18-70mm/F3.5-5.6 standard lens; Sony 75-300mm/F4.5-5.6 zoom lens; Sony 50mm/F2.8 Macro lens
Filters: 55mm Hoya UV, 55mm Hoya R72 Infra-red, 55mm Hoya Circular Polarizer, and a couple of 55mm Hoya Neutral Density filters
7.1MP Olympus SP-550UZ digital point-and-shoot camera (my back-up camera)
Inca tripod - light-weight and sturdy

I'm still in the process of discovering my own style, but I love shooting landscapes, birdlife, macro and infra-red :D I would love to work for National Geographic one day.

you can see examples of my work at:

http://achillescrue.deviantart.com and http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/user/Achilles. I also have photo albums on my Facebook profile:):

You've served me well all these years
Greeting with both hands trusting with no fears
Till the end

The best one Ro, is Amorphis where the singer's hair was flying out to the side! That was a great capture!!
What did you use for lens?

Thanks Cristy! Almost all the time I used a 50mm f/1.8 lens
but when you click on the pic, you can see at the right side a link to see the proprieties of the image, then you can see the iso I've used, apperture, exposure time etc

Thank you :D Had a look at your photos - WOW!!! You got great stuff there :D

I agree with Cristy about the best pic being the Amorphis one where the singer's got his hair flying out to the side :D but I liked all of them :D

How did you manage to get a press pass? Do you work for a newspaper/magazine or...? :)

Thank you Sherry!
Achilles, I used to write and translate some Scorpions Articles for one of the biggest brazilian rock websites. Since the owner knows I'm a photographer, he's gaving me a chance to get the press pass for some concerts

Thank's Elton and Cristy! Let's keep working on our dreams

I used to get two lenses, a 18-55mm and a 28-80mm. But both are too dark, it reaches only f/5.6 and f/3.5 only when it's on 18 to 28mm. Then I got a more apropriated lens for concerts, although it doesn't have a zoom, it's a clearly lens, reaching f/1.8, which is great for lightening concerts. Later I'll get a great zoom lens, which at least f/2.8, but clearly zoom lens are the most expensive ones! Cause for a 50mm lens, it doesn't have a lot of lenses to the light pass through. Aut, a zoom clearly lens has a lot of lenses, and it must be large to let the light get in in less time, that's what makes these lenses very expensive to buy, so much more than a camera!

Yeah MY dream right now is to have Elton talk to me again!!
Also, Ro check into EBAY cuz they have really great lenses for cheap. I bet you can get a great zoom lens that the pros use so you can get some really great photos of the bands. OR like here in Loveland, there is a used camera store where I am going to buy my lenses WHEN I get a job!! Oh yeah and pawn shops. But the used camera store is run by a professional photographer who checks out the cameras and lenses before he sells them.

I'm moneyless and I couldn't buy any lens right now anyway! LOL But thanks! ehehe
A zoom lens isn't so that expensive, I could buy a 75-300mm by less than 200 dollars, but it's a dark lens. A concert needs clearly lens >.<
