Tomorrow is Remembrance Day. Take time to remember those who lost their lives fighting for freedom anywhere in the world. My Grandfather and his 3 brothers fought in WWII. They all came back alive. A miracle considering the odds. My Grandmother said they all lived in fear of the telegram delivery man.
Grandad fought in Belgium and England as far as we know. He never told us anything about the war. He wouldn't talk about what he had seen. He did ingrain in us a respect and gratitude for those who fought and died for our freedom. He would ask us every year why we wear poppies. "We wear our poppies over our hearts with gratitude for those who died so we could be free". As he would say "Yer damn right!" ( Then he'd be in trouble for swearing around the grandkids ).
His wife's sister lost her husband when his plane was shot down over the Netherlands. In the mid-1990's when a swamp was being drained his remains were found. He is now buried in the Netherlands. His widow, surviving daughter and one grandaughter have been to visit his grave.
I used to wonder what we would do on Remembrance Day when there were no more war veterans to march in the parades. Sadly, there seems to be no end to conflict so unfortunately, I will never know.
