Grunge Music

Unread postby AddictedToTheJam » December 15th, 2003, 1:42 am

I know that this is a METAL-HEAD forum but Isn't there anyone else here who gives it up to the grunge bands? And I dun mean ****in Nirvana (they were good and all but come on, they were NOT the best grunge band) I mean isn't there anyone else that goes wild when they hear Chris Cornell
(Soundgarden, Temple Of the Dog) wail? Layne Staley (Alice in Chains)'s
Gutteral sound or Eddie Vedder( Pearl Jam)'s impassionated low vocals?
Doesnt anyone wanna jam around when Jerry Cantrel (Alice in Chains)'s Les Paul is played like that? I dunno I'm just not feeling that grungy kinda luv, you know? Cause I'm a metal head no question but I'm also a grunge munky without question. So i;m just wondering if I am the only one?

Matthias Jabs said something really interesting about grunge bands. He said that these guys used to sing about no tomorrow and after the end of the night they wave their goodbies saying "see you next year!"

Pearl Jam are grunge, but for those of you who don't know about them check out Temple of The Dog, it is a band compoing of the members of soundgarden and pearl jam. It was around b4 pearl jam existed and b4 soundgarden was famous, it was put together for one alburt to pay hommage to andrew wood, (some consider the father of grunge), who died of a heroine overdose in 1990

I'd have to agree with Rot about the negativity, but Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog put out some really nice stuff. And a few months ago there was an old broadcast of a Pearl Jam show in Tokyo on VH1, I think, and it blew me away. There was so much potential; the bands just didn't harness it well.

I dislike most of it and the themes predominantly suck, but there is one band I love(loved):

Alice In Chains- One of my all time favorites of all bands, originally more of a Metal band but ultimately considered more of a Grunge band. Layne Staley had an incredible voice, one so perfectly suited for the music, but the damn fool let his lyrics become a reality and the drugs took his life. What a shame and waste of talent. On a positive note, guitarist Jerry Cantrell is still utilizing his great talents and I hope he realizes a long and successful career.

I also like Stone Temple Pilots, but here again the damn Heroin rears its ugly head and sabotages any effort for the band in reaching their potential. When I really want to hear a fast paced rocker with teeth that really gets my adrenaline flowing, I put on “Crackerman” from their 1st album “Core”.
