Bootlegs

Unread postby Stormchaser » November 17th, 2003, 9:47 pm

What’s your opinion? Are bootlegs OK or are they wrong to make or possess? Do they really cause harm to the band? If you approve of bootlegs, would you take the chance to record one at risk of getting kicked out or busted? Assume you have 1st row center with backstage passes!

I’m a hypocrite. I think bootlegs are wrong but I would love to have them. I think they are wrong because they are unauthorized recordings forbidden by the musicians, but I really don’t think they do any harm or cause financial loss. Would I take the chance? No, especially 1st row center with backstage passes. I’d be kicking myself forever if I lost that experience, not to mention the risk of jail or lawsuits.

Good question. I love to buy bootlegs. However, I would never make/produce one, because then I'd be making money off of the band's success. That is the part that I think is bad. The bootlegs I buy have never been from the original maker, so I think it's just like buying a used CD. I also know a lot of musicians don't care about bootlegs. Joe Elliott even has a bunch of Bowie ones himself, and he thinks that bootlegs just help popularize a band.

I tell you......i have some bootleg, and i want to keep to get them again, but what i can say that every album the Scorpions made i always bought original, if they would make more live albums i'll buy them.
Even if you don't pay the right to the band for the bootleg, for me it's a love gesture for them, for their music, i like their live concert, and if they don't sell it i'll buy somewhere.
The only critic that i can make is that they made only 3 live albums in more of 35 years, this isn't good.
Yes to bootleg!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bootleg is just away to cause mistiouf. It also is a way to be able to listien or see a peice of art befor you buy an item. It is a toss up between those that are die hard fans and those that simply don't care about what happens to the artist or those that are key supporters and workers of the artists.

My opinion is that the bootlegs are very important materials for a real fanatic! These are the paradise for the collectors. It doesn't it wrong for the band because these recordings don't release in official way! (only sometimes a few songs in any official live album)Besides these materials are not unhurting to the band however popularize them!!! [8D

good question, Storm! i agree with you, bootlegs don't cause really big harm to the band if people record them only for themselves and don't make and sell pirate copies... as for me... i'd take a risk and record the show if i just bye a ticket for the 1- 10th row... center or not center... i'll manage but you assume 1st row center and backstage passes... that means something special... in that case i guess i won't take a risk, cause in that case i'm risking not only staying at the show but i'm risking to loose the trust of people who gave me those passes...

I think bootlegs should be authorised cuz fans would like to know what happened in concerts they couldn't attend

I think bootlegs don't hurt or harm the artist as long as it is for your personal use. I can understand the point of view of the artist when they spend countless hours and money to produce a (live) album. I think that it does harm the artist when it is made for personal monetary profit, but I don't think there's anything wrong when it is just another die hard fan like myself who just wants to be able to listen or watch their favorite band on a show they couldn't attend.
