Death, painful and heartless

Unread postby Sandra » November 16th, 2003, 12:19 pm

Yesterday one of my two horses had to put to sleep.. He had broke his leg in his enclosed pasture. I haven´t really understand what´s happend yet, but I miss him so much! He was an islandic horse and the cutest horse I´ve even seen.

What I wan´t to ask you all ppl, is if you have lost an animal that you´ve got attached to? How did you do to get over it? I am really greatful for all the answers!

First Of all, I really sorry to hear about the loss of your horse.
Well, the first time I lost a friend like yours, was about 10 years ago when my dog died. I felt bad for some months, then I went back to normal and had only good memories of her.
Then some years later I lost a cat and I felt the same way.
So, in my case, time and good memories made me feel better.

Yeah I had 2 turtles too....they were aquatic turtles...I bought them when I was in Saudi Arabia and braught them with me to Lebanon...they lived with me like about 1 or 2 years cuz I used to take care very well of them and give them bath:D
They even had an egg a vey small one but as there was no sand it was just left out in the water I tried to save it but it didn't make it:D(I'm not sure if it was an egg :P)
One day one of them died and the next week the other one...cuz they couldn't leave without each other....I was so so so so sad ..I put them in a well closed box(from insicts) and burried them about half a meter in the garden so cats wouldn't eat them ...I miss them now:(

Sandra, how awful, I feel so bad for you. I know how much fun you've had with your horses. (Eight of the horses I used to ride, in lessons and as "leased horses" have passed on over the 12 years that I've been taking lessons. But I didn't have to make the decision to put them to sleep. The owners were left with that burden). You'll see bits of his personality in the horses that come into your life afterwards. All you can know is that you gave him a good life, cared for him to the best of your ability, and in the end did what was humane. Cold comfort I know, but for now keep telling yourself that. Take extra care of your other horse, he will miss his friend. Give him some carrots and a hug from me.

Time doesn't heal all wounds, love does. I still miss the cat that I had for 13 years and my dog that I had to have put to sleep because she ruptured a disc in her back. Our setter had cancer and she was put to sleep when she was unable to enjoy her life. I have two more cats and a dog, (who is snoring on the floor right now). They fill the space left by the others.

Anna, just to sleep is a chanse you haveto take, everything is dangerous. Don´t be afraid to get an new pet.

Anchez, that is a way.. and I think something like that will happen to me and the same time I don´t wanna go and be sad. it aint easy to know what to do about the feelings you feel when you´ve lost someone. I don´t know.. guess I´ll never know either..

Sandra, I share your pain. Horses are such noble animals. Those big brown eyes are amazing. They seem to see straight into the soul.

To me, animals are a gift from God. They are our friends and for some...family. Losing them is hard.

I had a dalmation (Perdy) for 8 years. When I lost her last year, it devistated me. My Dad thought I was silly for crying so much. But she loved me...not because I was pretty or famous or anything like that. She just loved me.

I've since loved other pets although no one can really take her place. I believe she was given to me for a reason. While she was here on this earth no one could have loved her like I did as I am sure that you loved Blesi better than anyone else could. She was blessed having you as her pal. Take care.

Sandra, I feel for you. For some people losing a pet or animal is like losing a family member. Count me as one of those people. I’ve had two dogs put to sleep, one was 10, the other on his 15th birthday. Toughest thing I’ve ever had to do. It’s been 2 years since the last one died and I still dream about him. Time lessens the pain and sometimes a new pet accelerates the healing process. On one hand I don’t ever want to go through another death, but on the other I think the benefit outweighs the trauma.

I think you need to realize that putting the horse to sleep was not painful and heartless. On the contrary, it was a humane act that relieved the animal from a life of suffering. Even though his life ended prematurely, think of how good that life was and of all the happiness you shared together. Think of how the horse surely loved you for the way you made its life better. Think of how you were blessed to have an animal that enriched your life. Best wishes for you in coping with your loss.

Sorry for your loss Sandra,
Stormchaser is right, it's like losing a family member.
My Border Collie "Panama" was killed in traffic right before my eyes
two years ago and it still replays in my mind. It's difficult to forget a friend like that. A terrible chore for any man to do is build his dog a casket and dig him a grave in your yard. At least he'll always be home which is some consolation.
All dogs go to heaven Sandra,..... so they can round up those horses up there.

Oh Sandra, I am sorry about your horse. Rest assured that he is eating fresh green grass and apples everyday now.
We have horses too and right now I feel sad, our horses are racing horses and two weeks ago one of them slipped in the back of the horse trailer (there was a lot of mud) and cracked her shoulder bone. She just got operated on day before and I really hope she will be o.k. We have lost many animal friends over the years and I always cry like a baby each time. Horses and dogs are my passion and to see any in pain hurts.
Hugs Sandra and chin up. Remember the good times you had together and you'll realise that they out number the sad. Oh and did you know?? Horses never die.....they become unicorns in their next life.

Sandra,
No, my horse did not break her shoulder bone, she cracked it. Once a horse breaks a bone there is no way to set it back. She underwent the operation (with heart surgeon and all to moniter her), they stretched her neck back into line and have her shoulder strapped. Her movement is extremely limited and she gets massages and muscles stretches twice daily. So far the vet has been very optimistic and he figures that she will recover completely and will be able to run with time.
I still have my fingers crossed, the good thing is that she should be home with us by christmas!

Sorry to hear about your iguana....if you ever come to Belize you can carry back as many as you like! They live all along the riverbanks and are often seen sunning themselves if you go kayaking up the river. To be honest, I am scared of them because of their looks but I have heard that they make good, loving pets.
