I've noticed in some of the pics in the Gallery that Matthias is smoking. Does anyone know if he has quit yet?

I smoked for 20 years and quit 12 years ago. Ironically, 6 months after I quit I was diagnosed with cancer. If I hadn't quit when I did I wouldn't be alive today. In 1998 I had, what we hope is, the last of my surgeries. It's never too late to quit. And it's always a bad idea to start. I'll tell you, I miss my smokes every day but will continue to be a reformed smoker.

My father went last year for a chest x-ray before a gallbladder surgery and they found that he had lung cancer. He postponed the gallbladder surgery but had to have the lower left lobe of his lung removed. He made it through that surgery well but the cancer then spread to his spine. He woke up one morning & could not move. We took him to the hospital & they said he needed emergency radiation treatment. They thought he would never walk again but he was lucky to get into a clinical trial for some medication & today he is up walking with the help of a cane. He smoked for years, started when he was 13 but quit about 15 years ago. So please if you smoke, quit and if you don't smoke, keep it that way.

Yaya's is right. I ran a 1 km fitness test a week after quitting and had fluid in my lungs afterward. Those commercials about the truth are excellent. Tobacco manufacturers don't just roll tobacco up into cigarettes. The tobacco in cigarettes is processed the same way paper is made. It is pulped, chemicals removed, chemicals added, dried in thin sheets and shredded.

Smoking is a habit and an addiction. You have to treat it as both. And it's like alcoholism, an every day battle. I miss my smokes every day. Get all the help you can from your Doctor. Remember, as with any goal, people expect you to fail though they encourage you to succeed. They aren't being mean, they don't want you to be disappointed.

Smoking is a very hand-to-mouth habit, watch what you eat when you are quitting. Don't expect to have more money, food to taste better or things to smell better. Have a goal for your cigarette money, mine is riding lessons. I don't deliberatly set money aside I just know that at $5 to $7 a pack Cdn, 3 to 5 packs of smokes are equal to one $25 per/hour riding lesson once a week. ( My father, ever the voice of reason, pointed out that I gave up one dangerous habit that will kill me slowly for another dangerous habit that will kill me instantly, thanks Dad.)

I quit cold turkey. You may even have to alter your social circle i.e. your smoking buddies at work. It all depends on how bad you want it. My son was always sick when we smoked. I didn't realize what an impact both of us smoking had on his health.

And if you don't smoke don't start.

" Havocec: I'll tell you, I miss my smokes every day but will continue to be a reformed smoker
A testimony to the strength of the addiction. Some people lose a lung and still continue to smoke. Way to be strong Havocec, and good luck in your continued abstinence. Best wishes for a long cancer free life.

I like to think of myself as a person with common sense, but here I am smoking a pack a day even though I know there is no benefit, only severe consequences. Most forms of self-destructive behavior at least give the user a reward (i.e. drink alcohol get a buzz) but what the hell do cigarettes have to offer? Gotta give up these damn things. Thanks for the motivation and inspiration.

Thanks Havocec, you really are an inspiration. I know what you are saying about the 'money' thing, I always said that when I quit I would use the money I spent each week on cigrettes to fill my home with fresh flowers as I love them so much. Thanks again

I can’t give any cessation advice since I have never tried smoking but I can offer my encouragement. If anyone is ever in the Frankfurt Germany area I’d be glad to share a celebratory 10K run with you when you manage to kick the habit. The offer extends to the Colorado group as well when I climb three 14ers in one day next July. Would love to have you with me.

To Sheryl, Scorpsdiva, and Stormchaser,
I never smoked, but........
This is how you quit,
Firstly, clear your calendar for one day.
Stroll on down to 7-11 and get yourself a pack of rolling papers.
Go home, sit at your kitchen table, empty one of your cigs into a rolling paper.
Trim off some of your hair and mix it in with the tobacco along with a toe nail.
Roll it up tight and twist the ends like you were going to a scorps show.
Stand over your toilet or have a bucket next to you.
Light that puppy , and enjoy it , inhale as much as you can withstand.
Next, prepare to be violently ill, expect to be friends with that bucket for a while and accept the fact that you will never forget that smell or taste for as long as you live.
The very next time you lift a cigarette to your lips or even think of a camel, it will conjure up painful memories of that day and you will never smoke again.
Or you can be wimps and use those silly patches and pretend you are quitting.
Silver

Nothing like a little negative association, eh Silver? I’m sure it is effective. I once got so sick from Southern Comfort that my stomach tuns just seeing it on a shelf. Never drink that rot gut again. Thanks for the advice, but I’ll try using mental discipline first. It worked for me once (made it 3 years), so I know I can do it again. The key is REALLY wanting to quit. If you try to quit for the sake of quitting, you’re at a big disadvantage. If you are motivated to quit, your road to success is easier to navigate. If that fails, then maybe its pukin’ time.

Eric - Thanks for the offer on your three 14er climb in Colorado. I can't say that it's likly I will be doing any Mountain Climbing in July but hey, if you are in the area, look me up. I'd love to meet ya and if you've never been to a concert at Red Rocks, Its a MUST do when you visit Colorado. But most of all thank you so much for offering encouragement to all of us trying to kick the habit.

Silver - Thanks for your advise, heck I must really be a whimp cus I won't even use the patch. I'm with Stormy, mental discipline first. I'm guessing one of your friends did this to themselves since you've never smoked I bet they also never smoked again.

Stormy - I loveeeeeeeee southern comfort.

Well I'm going to give it another shot, but I'm going to have to pass on Silver's tobacco-hair-toenail doobie. That's just a bit to gross. Eric, I'd love to join you for your climb, but how about if I just hang out at the bottom and cheer you on, LOL. Did I read it right, you're going to climb three 14ers in one day? That's freakin awesome. Look me up when ya get here, I'd love to meet ya too.Yaya's thanks for the running advise, but I don't run. I do however kick ass on the stair machine(not so much bouncing around). Looks like I'm going to add 2 or 3 days to my gym schedule

HAVOCEC, I REALLY ADMIRE YOUR STRENGH AND I´M HAPPY YOU´RE ALIVE TODAY.

ABOUT MATT SMOKING, YES HE DOES. IN THEIR CONCERT IN LORCA, SPAIN, HE APPEARED SMOKING A CIGARRETTE BEFORE "WIND OF CHANGE", IT WAS JUST LIGHTEN (IS SAID THAT WAY?) SINCE IT WAS ALMOS COMPLETE, HE WINKED AT ME AND THREW IT TO ME, IT DIDN´T REACH ME SO THE GUARDS GAVE IT TO ME, AND IT WAS STILL LIGHTEN, SO I SMOKED A BIT JUST TO TASTE HIS SPIT! (I NEVER SMOKE, BUT UNDERSTAND, IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL OCASSION!)
THEN I KEEP THE REST INSIDE A PLASTIC EMPTY BOTTLE, WHILE I SHOWED HIM HOW I DID IT... HE DOUBLED UP!
