Carmen,

The Orvelnovel is a great utopia about communism.
It was incredible how he had a sensibility in 30s when he wrote the novel how communism would work.
It is the greatness of the novel.

As for me, still a Durrel book, called: Cops from Bafut.
It is about another collector-trip but now in Camerun.
He trawelled to Camerun in 1949 to Camerun to collect unique anymals for his zoo in London.
This book consists of humorous and interesting stories about the work there.
You can get to know lotsof interesting anymals which live only on that area.
He describts their caracters and appearances fantasticly, spicing it with his excellent sense of humor.
Klaus-THE SPECIAL ONE,
Rudolf-THE WISE ONE,
Matthias-THE COOL ONE,
Pawe-THE SIMPLE ONE,
James-THE CRAZY ONE,
The Scorpions are THE NICEST GUYS.

I have read "1984" but I never liked it. Anyway, it's a dystopia (or anti-utopia), but not utopia. And I wouldn't say it's just about communism, it's also about Nazi Germany. For example all the thought control - Gestapo (Germany) and NKVD (Russia), all the youth organizations - The Hitler Youth (Germany), Young Pioneers (Russia) etc...

Currently reading: "Psychopatology" by Jüri Saarma

Brave new world by Aldous Huxley.
This is a fantastic book that inspired Iron Maiden with its Album Brave New World-2000

The world the novel describes is a utopia, albeit an ironic one: humanity is carefree, healthy and technologically advanced. Warfare and poverty have been eliminated and everyone is permanently happy due to government-provided stimulation. The irony is that all of these things have been achieved by eliminating many things that humans consider to be central to their identity — family, culture, art, literature, science, religion, and philosophy. It is also a hedonistic society, deriving pleasure from promiscuous sex and drug use, especially the use of soma, a powerful drug taken to escape pain and bad memories through hallucinatory fantasies. Additionally, stability has been achieved and is maintained via deliberately engineered and rigidly enforced social stratification.

Hah, I see that a lot of people read 1984. It's really good and shocking book.
Who then devised the torment? Love.
Love is the unfamiliar Name
Behind the hands that wove
The intolerable shirt of flame
Which human power cannot remove.
We only live, only suspire
Consumed by either fire or fire.
