Chicgao Review 2012-6-29

Unread postby Stormchaser » June 30th, 2012, 9:38 pm

Went to what is most likely my final Scorpions concert in Chicago last night, been a fan since hearing The Zoo in 1980 and ever since they’ve been the backbone of the soundtrack of my life. I’ve seen a lot of shows over the years and can honestly say I was never disappointed, going into last night I was wondering if that was going to change. Will the years have finally caught up to them? Will the passion be there? Am I going to see something that is going to leave me thinking they should have hung it up already instead of hanging around to hammer out one last tour? In all honesty a lot of those questions arose from what I’d seen on video and what I’ve read on this site. One thing I learned after seeing last night’s show is never make judgments based on home video, regardless how good the quality it doesn’t come close to capturing the sound or experience as hearing and seeing it for yourself. As for the negative stuff it certainly didn’t apply to what I saw last night, while it wasn’t the best show I’ve seen them perform it was still an excellent performance that exceeded my expectations and left me leaving feeling very satisfied and pleased with my experience.

What stood out most had to be the energy of the band and the solid leads Matthias played. I’ve read about them “going through the motions” at other shows and last night they were certainly going through the motions! While I wasn’t exactly expecting a laid back approach I didn’t expect to see all that energy. Matthias & Rudy running up and down the platform extension like men many years younger, all the guys were seemingly in constant motion and playing with a passion that you knew was genuine. You can tell the guys still really love playing for the fans and that’s something that takes a good show to an even higher level. It really does make a difference when you know the heart is in it last night I think the fans really appreciated the effort they were getting. That effort was especially apparent in Matthias, he played like a man possessed and while he’s always kicked ass he put in one of the most aggressive performances I’ve seen from him since the Face The Heat tour. With the exception of Make it Real he not only stayed true to the studio version he attacked the songs and brought the leads to a higher level. Song after song rang true, right down to the very end of the concert where he was blistering note after note in a frenzy, reminding me of stuff from his early years. Scorps have always been a guitar oriented band and when the leads are sizzling the band is smoking and they were really on fire last night! If there was one other thing that stood out it was the amazing voice of Klaus, you’re still the best and in Chicago we were still loving you!

My only criticism would be the same I usually have, the length of the set and the setlist itself. I know there are time constraints but I can’t believe it can’t be managed in order to produce a 2+ hour show. With a history so long and discography so rich a 90 minute show doesn’t really do the band or the fans justice. Neither does the setlist, there was nothing from the Uli years and nothing from a few Matthias era albums as well. Also, near the end of the show a thunderstorm was in the air above the stadium and they only played No One Like You & RYLAH for the encore, skipping Still Loving You. I don’t blame the band for that though, while I definitely appreciate a good storm  I don’t expect the band to act as human lightning rods and agree with the decision to cut the show short.

I did have the pleasure of meeting up with Mary (Skorpsfan1), Billy Mac and Billy Mac’s friend (sorry I forgot your name) as well as a few other people. It was good to see you all again and maybe one day we’ll all meet up again for another show if we’re so lucky. As for the band I want to thank them for all the great years of music you’ve enriched my life with and all the great performances you’ve treated me to, including last night’s show which will go down as another great time I had watching my favorite band of so many years. Thanks for the memories, keep on rocking as long as the desire and ability is there…it definitely was last night!

Sorry I didn't Have a chance to meet up with people.. I was pushing my luck as it was with going so soon after foot surgery.
I loved the show last night. I agree, I have seen better from them. But for me it is because after having 2nd row seats sitting 10 rows back just isn't the same.. I was glad the Rain held out as long as it did..
I would also like to thank the Scorpions for the last 30 yrs they have been my Favorite band. And for my Favorite Song Lady Starlight...
I will Miss going to watch the Concerts. But their music will always be with me..

WOW STORMCHASER!! LOVE LOVE LOOOVED YOUR REVIEW!! That was an amazing commentary. And yes, when I saw them at Red Rocks, I haven't seen them better than that nite!! They were channeling their Golden Days and it was beautiful to behold! Klaus voice was perfection and Rudolf and MJ were spot on and killing it! Course James was slamming like ANIMAL and being crazy stickman dude and Pawel was adorable, throwing kisses to all the girls, *including me LOL* and I haven't heard him sound better either!! They all were on fire and blistered the night air and us and the mountains surrounding us!! :P
Thank you for that review and let's all hope that even tho they are slowing down in touring, that we will see them ONE MORE TIME!!!! :music-rockout: :music-rockon: :music-rockout: :music-rockon:

Wow, Mike. Great review! You really captured it! Some thoughts of my own....

It was a nice night weather wise and the rain literrally held off until just seconds after the show! Charter One Pavilion is an incredible venue - my favorite in the city. Holds about 8,000 and looking around it was a packed house! Nice to see.

Tesla did a very solid job and played a full hour, which is a bit long for an Opener and that was fine with me. I had the dis-pleasure of seeing Dokken open in East Moline, IL a couple years ago and they are completely finished. Ratt was solid in 08 but Tesla is a VERY good compliment to the Scorps. The singer - EAT A FVCKING TURKEY SANDWICH BROTHER!! (See your guitarist and bassist, they can definitely show you how to eat). All kidding aside, good opener, my friends and I are all pretty big Tesla fans and we were pleased.

I agree with Mike - I really liked the energy, especially from Matthias. He's my fave member of the band and when I met him backstage in Indianapolis during the Face the Heat tour, he left a very lasting memory with me. That guy STILL operates on full throttle! I realize that he's 5-10 years the junior of Klaus and Rudy, he's still in his mid 50's. He's got that smile that says that he genuinely likes being out there. People don't think of MJ as being a very "influential" guitarist but he definitely has his disciples from Richie Sambora to Fernando Van Arb (Krokus) - both were very influenced by Matthias.

As far as James - I really love that crazy son of a b1tch! I realize he's not Herman Rarebell but how can you hate a guy who's a) the only American ever to be a member of this band b) Irish and c) someone that plays like a little kid. I've read reviews of how ppl can do without his drum solo. The video, the whole production, I really love it! His youthful energy is a wonderful compliment to the rest of the band. Thank you, James.

Klaus sounded great. I think the night off the day before really did the guys some good, especially with the heat both in TX and Chicago.

Set List was great. Hit Between The Eyes was inserted (although I would've preferred Dynamite), Is There Anybody There and Send Me An Angel were played. Still Loving You was not. I didn't think about it but I think Mike is right - the storm was coming (with thunder) and they were probably advised to cut it down.

I agree on the short set list. They've always had one. I see it from their side, too, though. When I first saw them (May 21st, 1984), they were already were no longer kids. They typically tour for 2-3 years. Gotta wear on you which we started to see at the front end of this tour (with Klaus' vocal issues, pneumonia, etc). Gotta pace yourself in this game.

What I really liked was the pyro! I never saw fireworks or flames at any Scorps show! It really added to it!! It was like the fvcking stage was exploding! I guess the outdoor venue allowed them to do that.

My buddies Caesar, Julius and George really enjoyed the show. I got to see my friend Mary (Skorpsfan1) and Mike (Stormchaser) and it was great to catch up with them. I'm a good person. But these are GREAT people and WEAPONS GRADE SCORPS FANS - JESUS CHRIST! Friday was my 19th Scorps show and I look like an amateur next to these people.

Finally, THANK YOU Scorpions!!! I'm genuinely going to miss those five crazy ass mother fvckers!!

My review has come to a merciful end..........

Thanks, Victory. I didn't see any Savage Amusement shirts, otherwise I would've said hello.

Well, they were all backstage til it was time for Tesla anyway, so.... But you probably didn't notice, James was wearing a Savage Amusement tee shirt on stage. Pretty cool!! I am hearing that it was an amazing time there and the venue was awesome and the band couldn't have played better than if they were in the 80's!! I am so happy for everyone, I could bust!! But I am so very proud of the BBRW who are running HOT HOT HOT!!

Thanks Billy. Looks like I'm not the only one to forget names, I'm Mike not Tim but it's all cool and it was great to hook up with you again 4 years later!

Totally agree, they played damn well and deserved to be opener based on the performance. Great job on leads by the bigger dude and as for the singer I made almost the same remark 8 years ago advising him to go chow on a cheeseburger or three...looks like he never took the advice. Good set of pipes though and that's all that matters.

Thanks for the kind words but if you're talking weapons grade I think you're at the nuclear level amigo :)

A couple things I'd add that I neglected in my initial post. Security was much better this time around, they were constantly clearing out people weaseling their way up to the 1st row. I was in the 2nd row and it was nice to not have 5 rows of people jammed in front of me and I'm sure the people in the 1st row were happy not be be squeezed in by masses of bodies jostling around. I think the stage set up helped as it dissected the rows down the middle and made for easier crowd control. Also, as Billy noted, the place was packed. It was nice to see a full house and Chicago once again came out in support of the band. The venue had great acoustics as well although the volume was near deafening and my ears are still ringing 24 hours later. No complaints though, I may be getting old but I still love it loud 8). Speaking of getting old, you'd think as a 47 year old man I'd feel funny dressed in a concert T and letting it all loose like a kid but when the lights go down and the band hits the stage all thoughts of time and age are gone as you get lost in the music of your life.

As the boys have taught us, age is just a number and as I have always said "Rockers are ageless"!!!

Glad for all of you and my friends who were there! I am almost as excited about this show as if I were there. Well I was in spirit and in name cuz my friends yelled out my name in the venue. hahaha

Stormchaser... GREAT Review!
It was a great show thru and thru and Scorpions didn't lack any energy.
When people say that they could do without the drum solo, they don't realize that it's a break for the rest of the band who are going full throttle giving the audience their money's worth... and it's also a chance for James to showcase the cartoon of a personality that he is.

All of us (Savage Amusement) were backstage before the show and during Tesla's set. Our drummer Patrick got a photo behind James' kit and our guitarist Kevin got his Gibson Explorer signed by Matthias and those two had a great chat... chattering like monkeys in a tree! (No doubt talking about guitars!)

15 minutes before James goes on, he can't find the Savage Amusement Jeff (our bassist) had given him, so then he wants to trade me mine, so he gives me a GangStar shirt to wear, and so, that is why I didn't have my band shirt on!

Our friend and photographer Dave had one of the SA shirts on, and he got a photo pass to shoot the 1st 3 songs. I know Dave is working on those photos as we speak.

We all had seats in section 103 row Q, about 7 rows in front of the catwalk. I was pretty much standing dead center.

James is not good with numbers..He always said they had 25,000 in San Antonio and the place they played at holds 11,000 people..maybe in certain places one person counts twice..

either way big crowds all over the place..

Mike thank you for an amazing review of the show..you are a true fan of the band..
