Despite anyone’s beliefs, Scorpions and Klaus Meine place amongst the most influential and most important names of the Rock Music, is undoubtful. After the release of ‘’MTV Unplugged in Athens’’ we took the opportunity and spoke with Meine, who shares with us many interesting things about Scorpions’ last concert and recording project, as well as the place that these Germans have in the hearts of the Greek fans. Ladies and Gentlemen, here is Klaus Meine!
Hello Mr. Meine, my name is Theodoris, from Rocking.gr! How are you?
I’m fine, thanks, how are you?
Im fine too. It’s a great honor for Rocking.gr and myself personally that we have this interview.
Now that ‘’MTV Unplugged’’ is released, how do you feel about it?
Great! We had some awesome time in Athens in September and the fans were great. From the beginning we wanted to go to Greece for this concert. In the past years, throughout the MTV Unplugged history the concerts were help in a studio with a small group of fans attending, and we convinced them that we want to make this concert in Athens with the Greek fans and this beautiful amphitheatre, and it turned out to be a historical moment because it was the first MTV Unplugged concert that was help outdoors and it took part at the most appropriate place and the fans were unbelievable. We have fantastic memories from the week we had in Athens giving these concerts. It was exciting and fantastic seeing the fans so happy because we were back in Greece for this project and for the songs we played. We went through all the Scorpions history.
I know, I was there on the first day, the concert was amazing, same as the final result as we can listen to it in the album. Are you satisfied with the result? Did you fulfilled, or maybe exceeded, your expectations?
Totally! I think it turned out to be fantastic! In the DVD u can see all the songs and the whole concert and all the extras, like the documentary, the visits we had from the fans, and everything about the concerts. I think the whole package is amazing. All these years we have received so much love from the Greek fans, and this is our way to give them some.
And we thank you very much for that! Compared to Acoustica, u would say MTV Unplugged is one step forward, or just something different?
Both of them! I think it is one step forward and at the same time, something different. Knowing about the production of Acoustica in 2001, this time we had the Swedish Musicians and all that Swedish ‘’gang’’, especially on the arrangement of the songs. From the beginning we focused on not to repeat ourselves, we wanted to surprise the fans with songs we never played live before, and for the classics we had totally new arrangements. Songs like ‘’Hit Between the Eyes’’, "Speedy's Coming", "In Trance’’ with the string instruments, they have something like an ‘’Arabic touch’’. It also depends on how we use certain instruments, like the accordion, the steel guitar and the harmonica. Many songs like ‘’Born to Touch your Feelings’’ and ‘’Where the River Flows’’ which had never been played live before, had a bit of Western feeling because of the accordion and the harmonica. It’s Scorpions Music in a new dimension. I think it’s one far step forward.
This would be the next question. I love all Scorpions stuff and especially the 70s and the early 80s, but personally I believe the peak moments of the concerts were ‘’Born to Touch your Feelings’’ and ’’Where the River Flows’’, with that blues / country/western feeling.
Yes, definitely! I believe we never played ‘’Born to Touch your Feelings’’ live and I thought it would be nice to add the last part of the song too, like the original version from the late 70s. So, like in the album, we added that part. We found Dimitra Kokkori, a brilliant new Greek Actor who did an awesome job. It was a very emotional moment, and you can see that in the DVD, and it turned out excellent. And you are right to say that it’s almost a blues version of western music, with a country touch, which turned out to be very beautiful, especially on these two songs.
Despite of how big and how rich any of your setlist is, there always are some fans complaining that some songs are missing from your albums with Uli and from the whole discography in general. Which is your main reason when u create a setlist?
The main reason was to go to the past and create a mixed setlist. With this setlist, it was like we had a totally new concert. We didn’t want to focus only on the big hits. We wanted to make a really dynamic setlist with many up-tempo songs, like the new ones "Dancing With the Moonlight" and "Rock 'N' Roll Band" and to add some never played songs too. I want to say that we surely ‘’missed’’ some songs, if we go all the way back to our first album, like…
For example, there were no songs from ‘’Lovedrive’’…
Yes, there were no songs from ‘’Lovedrive’’, or ‘’In Search of the Piece of Mind’’, from our first album. There could be more and beautiful versions in the setlist, I think we went through about 30-40 songs, to end up with 25-26 for the concert, and we played 2,5 hours. I know there are too many songs, but what can you do? We were with the Swedish musicians and when we gathered all the possible songs, we told them ‘’You find out which ones suit better’’ and I think they did a very nice job with that. For six months we worked on this setlist, playing songs in the studio in Hannover and Stockholm. I think the result was beautiful, but you will always think that there could be more songs…
The concert in overall was excellent, as were the songs too, but despite the great performances from the band and the musicians who accompany you, I would say the highlight of the concert was your vocals performance. Truly incredible!
Thank you, that’s very kind, thank you!
Trust me, it’s not me being kind, it’s the truth!
In an acoustic concert, you know, the vocals are in front and you must be in a good day because, if you want to make it and have a good performance, especially on acoustic concerts the setlist is long and it is a challenge for singer. Im glad it went well and everyone had a good time and at the end I was happy with my performance, because it did not need to go to the studio to fix details on vocals. It was unnecessary and I am very happy about it.
Is there a chance for the new songs to be recorded with electric guitars?
There were a few brand new songs and some like "Dancing with the Moonlight", where I wrote new lyrics to a song written by Matthias a few years ago and we have already recorded a rock version, and "Rock 'N' Roll Band". The only thing that changed was that I wrote new lyrics. We had already recorded rock versions of these songs and since we liked them, they were perfect for unplugged. In the end, Matthias came up with a brand new instrumental, the "Delicate Dance", Rudolf wrote "Love Is the Answer" and so did I (with "Follow Your Heart"). It was a good set, but you're right. Having these new songs, when we get back to the project that started about a year ago with the material from the ‘80s, we thought it will be nice for our diehard fans to release that material that didn’t make it to the albums. We started to work for that project before the concerts for MTV Unplugged. I am sure that at some point we will return to the studio to finish this project and those new songs will be part of it.
So it will be something like a mixed release of non-released 80s songs and the new ones?
Will it be released in 2014 or 2015?
I have no idea. Depends on when we will go back to studio and when we will have time to do this, hopefully awesome, album. Working on these songs, requires time. It’s not that we have changed, and no more have the 80s magic. The point is that these songs even back then, were then in progress, they were never completed songs. Some of the lyrics of those songs are just " blah - blah - blah - blah - blah - blah - blah " just for the making of the song to progresses, so it is not completed. Somewhere in all this material there is a great song that you should work with again. From my side I must begin with the lyrics because some of them are incomplete or in progress. It has a lot of work, but I think some of these songs will go very powerful.
Rudolf once said "I give the edge and Klaus gives the melody, which is why we make awesome combination." I would say that your success up to this day is based on something more than that, what would that be?
It is many things. It’s that he is the rhythm and I’m the melody. Rudolf has also said that he is the moon and the sun (laughs). There are many things that contribute to success. It is of course the fact that we not only play hard rock, is that we have this mix and that we are musically, open-minded. The fact that in my opinion makes Scorpions different is that we have songs with strong melodies that people can sing, and that we have songs that have proven classics and survived all these years and still remain classics, and ballads which were huge success. These are parts of the Scorpions long-living and bring us a new, large audience at concerts because kids watch our shows on YouTube and come see us live and return home with this ‘’special feeling’’ and this happens only when you go to a concert because Scorpions are a live band and this is where we give our best. There are no magic tricks though, we are just people who work together and all contribute, bring out the best of what they have, their creativity, their inspiration, and if a new song comes up, that’s great. All these years we reach the next generation with our music, this is fantastic and you could see that in Athens.
Having visited Greece many times and knowing who the Greeks are as fans and as people, how do you think we can cope with the current negative conjecture?
I believe that the Greek fans are simply wonderful because they love our music and they love not only the hit songs, they know all our songs and they support us for very long time. For this reason we decided to return to Athens, especially at a time when Greece goes through economically and politically difficult times, and make a statement. We came to Greece to share these shows with the audience and show the whole world that Greece is a beautiful country with wonderful people and that this is culture, this is the place where democracy was born . We wanted to come to Greece and make this statement for the Greek fans, saying that it is easy to celebrate when everything is fine and you enjoy your life, but it is difficult to do so when times are tough and that’s when know who your true friends are. This is what we feel about the Greek fans. We wanted to be there, especially this time, and then go around the world. We released a CD and DVD in 50 countries around the world, so I think that is a statement.
And we thank you for this. We will be expecting you here again in the near future.
We would like that too. We always want to come back here, but now, with this awesome project that took us so long to prepare until we come to Greece it's our turn(to be excited?!). We are excited waiting for the response from the world. There are few more concerts planned until the end of 2013. Then we want to take our breaths (laughs) and we will see what is next. We'll do a few more concerts in 2014, but currently there are no big plans. There are some MTV Unplugged concerts in France and Germany so we'll see. Apart from this, there is of course the project with the songs of the 80s decade, we will deal with it in 2014 and we will see what the future will bring, but still we always want to come back to Greece.
After everything that has already happened, do you see a ‘’Winf of Change’’ in Europe and generally worldwide?
The winds are changing directions every day and we hope they go to the right direction, so they will bring people together in a peaceful way, making the world a better place and hopefully we will find a path that will get us out of the crisis, not only for us, but for the future generations. We’re just musicians and our goal is to unite people with our music and to bridge the differences, and we hope that as artists we contribute to making the world a better place. It is our common future. We hope we all will find the path to peace.
So do I. The last words belong to you, maybe you have a message for the Greek fans.
What can I say, I would like to thank the Greek fans for all the love and support all these years and for our great stay in Athens. You proved once more that you have heart and soul for the arts and music. We feel really close to you all, and we can’t wait to see you again.
Thank you very much for this interview and I hope to see you again.
Ok Theodoris, I’m happy to speak with you. Thank you too.
How can we grow old when the soundtrack of our lives is rock and roll..!!!!
