SCORPIONS Guitarist Wants To Keep '80s 'Spirit' When Resurrecting Unfinished Songs - July 5, 2012
German hard rock veterans SCORPIONS spent the first three months of this year in the studio with producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen resurrecting a dozen unfinished songs from what some people believe was the band's best and most creative period — leftovers from the albums "Blackout" (1982), "Love At First Sting" (1984), "Savage Amusement" (1988) and "Crazy World" (1990) — for an album that is tentatively scheduled for release in 2013.

"We will dig in again and maybe have a selection of 16 to 18 songs and pick the best 12 from those," Jabs tells Billboard.com. "It's actually very good material." He adds, "We're doing it the way we are recording albums today, but the basic ideas, the riffs, the feel, the way they were written and arranged, we try to keep as much from the old recordings as possible. Thirty years later no one would come up with these ideas we came up with when we were younger, so we want to keep that spirit in there."

According to Jabs, the idea for the project "came from the fans. They were the ones saying, 'There must be some extra material from those days,' and they were right," he says.

The guitarist recently told ArizonaRepublic.com about the project, "There's so much strong material, but it hasn't ever been finished, especially the lyrics. They're like 'Blah blah blah blah blah.' It was recorded like you would record a demo, no click track, anything. But the vibe is great because it's from the time when we were starting out. Everything I played back then, I remember when I found a new riff, I would get excited. It's slightly different today because I know it all. I've heard it all. So it's much harder to get excited about the simplest or sometimes half-genius riff. But there was a definite spark in those old recordings and the idea is to redo them with today's technology and take it further as a tribute to the fans."

billboard.com interview with MJ:

Scorpions may be retiring from touring, but the music will go on -- with a new project already in motion.

Guitarist Matthias Jabs tells Billboard.com that the German headbangers have raided the vaults for "unfinished songs from the early '80s, leftovers from the 'Blackout' album, 'Love at First Sting,' which some people think is our best time." So far, he says, the quintet has worked on a dozen tracks with producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen, and more is on the way.

"We will dig in again and maybe have a selection of 16 to 18 songs and pick the best 12 from those," Jabs says. "It's actually very good material." The idea for the project, he adds, "came from the fans. They were the ones saying, 'There must be some extra material from those days,' and they were right." Scorpions are adding new parts to the existing recordings, while most of the songs "didn't have proper lyrics, just blah blah blah blah working lyrics. So in almost every song the lyrics have to be re-written."

And while he acknowledges that while "the time reflects on the music" from three decades ago, Jabs promises the group is taking pains to modernize the new recordings. "We're doing it the way we are recording albums today," Jabs explains, "but the basic ideas, the riffs, the feel, the way they were written and arranged, we try to keep as much from the old recordings as possible. Thirty years later no one would come up with these ideas we came up with when we were younger, so we want to keep that spirit in there."

Jabs says the album, which is so far untitled, will come out in 2013. The same year may also see a documentary about the band by director Katja Von Garnier, who's been tailing Scorpions for the past year and a half of its world tour, capturing some live footage but mostly interviewing band and crew members as well as other musicians and friends of the group. And Scorpions have been approached to perform at the opening ceremony of the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament in Sao Palo, Brazil, where, Jabs notes, "we are very popular. They flew over to London, England, to suggest this. They could've done it over the phone, but they wanted us to know it was serious. So we said, 'Yes, of course. We'll do it.' "

But, he adds, Scorpions have no plans to change their minds about retiring from the road after the tour's final concert on Dec. 15 in Oberhausen, Germany.

"We're not stopping making music or playing a one-off (show) or something, but this is the last tour," Jabs says. "We need to be realistic, and we can't continue like this for the next five to 10 years. We decided to stop at this point because we are still in great form now and would like to be remembered as a great live band by our fans forever. We don't want to grow old in the spotlight. But the sadness is there; mentally, it's not easy getting ready for a show and knowing it will be the last time in that place. That's a new experience, and it's not easy to cope with. I can't even think about (Dec. 15); I don't even want to think about what the emotion will be at the end of that show."

i like to show why SCORPIONS got a sting"

So much for playing Australia and U.K. and the other places that they promised they would play that haven't been played. Can anyone say SCREWED? Oh but not the countries who paid tons of money for them, yeah? Dec. 15th? Wow! Scorps, really? I sooooo expected more from them than this. I am sad and seriously disappointed in them!! I really hope they have the decency to play a few shows next year in those places!!!! Please Scorps don't let those fans down, NOW! We believe in you!!

Really hope the recordings won't be "modernized", keeping the original sonic and musical feel of the era they were written :D

Scorpions' best classics used to have kick, emotion, dynamics, feeling. Far cry from the loudness war-sake approach

I hope they don't use outside writers. The latest cd was littered with them. If thy are are incomplete songs I know they have it in them to complete them on their own. I did like the song Humanity though, and that used outsiders.

UJS, these are songs from the 80's that got tossed aside for the ones that made it on the albums. Meaning that the writers are more than likely Klaus and Rudolf, I doubt they will do any Herman ones on the album tho. There could also be a Matthias one maybe! But back then they were too hot with their writing and if they finish them in the same vein with the only "modernization" being the technology is better, than they are gonna have a fresh new hit album on their hands!

Sorry I got upset about that end date, but really, I thot.. it's just not fair to quit before these places are visited. :?

have they ever recorded a "studio" version of Living For Tomorrow? I think that song deserves a shot on a studio album, who knows if the band will include it in this new work... the song is also complete, they don't even need to add lyrics or music like the others!

I believe Matthias said that they have lots of "unfinished" work that they left laying on the cutting room floor that they want to get back to. I doubt that LFT is considered as such.

saying they are reworking on unfinished tracks doesn't exclude that they could insert some tracks never recorded in studio, the core will be made of unfinished songs for sure, but that song could fit an 80's style album very well IMHO.

me to rediscover them this year only because my BF dedicated a song to me by The Scorpions and the voice of this master got me so inticed that now I can never let go and I am looking forward to their next release. I know their unfinished songs will captivate me now just like they did back in the 70's..I can't wait!
