I received the new Unbreakable World Tour 2004: One Night in Vienna DVD yesterday… so last night I fixed myself a cocktail and settled down for an evening of enjoyment with the Scorpions!
The Scorpions opened on stage with the pulsating sounds of New Generation and upon completion immediately launched into Love ‘Em or Leave ‘Em without skipping a beat. For nearly 75 minutes, they played one song after another, hardly taking time to catch their breath. There wasn’t a bad song in the set list, with The Zoo and Through My Eyes emerging as my favorites of the night. Hopefully the Scorpions will come to the East Coast soon so I can hear these songs live again!
The energy that Klaus, Matthias, Rudy, Pawel and James have on stage is truly remarkable. Rudy, is like a rocket shooting across the stage throughout the whole concert. An appropriate nickname for him would be “Rocket Man”! I was tired just watching him! LOL
Klaus is overwhelming as he hits high note after high note without ever losing momentum. He plays to the crowd and you can tell by looking at his face how much he really loves performing on stage and making his audience happy. I know he always brings a smile to my face whenever I see him!
I am always amazed to watch Matthias as he plays on stage because he makes playing guitar look so easy. Of course I know it’s not, but when he has a guitar in his hand it is almost like he becomes “one” with the guitar as his movements are so smooth and uninterrupted. You can tell by watching him that he plays with passion and loves making music!
James has got to be the best damn drummer in the whole wide world! With arms and legs flying, he pounds those skins like no one else! An “animal” is an understatement! He is a BEAST on the drums!
Pawel is such a sweetheart. A bit reserved at first, but he really gets going later in the show and even ends up in a little dueling guitars with Rudy and Matthias. He is a good fit for the Scorps and I think his true personality will emerge fully once he becomes more comfortable playing with the Scorpions. I look forward to getting to know him more and more with every show.
If there is a downside to this DVD, I would have to say it was with the sound quality. It just isn’t consistent. All of a sudden, right in the middle of song, the sound drops out and becomes flat sounding. This usually happens during some of Klaus’s vocals. Even so,.... a few cocktails later you tend to overlook these things.
I did start to watch the Rockumentory, but it got to be too late and I needed to get to bed. I did see most of it though and it really is an interesting timeline of Scorpion’s history. I’m looking forward to watching the rest of it tonight.
