I would suggest first learning on acoustic guitar. Listen to many guitarists, and learn scales, chords, and intervals like mad. After maybe a year (give or take some) you could start working more on just rock guitar. One of the books I started with was by Troy Stetina. Much after that, to hone in on your craft, I would suggest learning how to play many different types of music - blues, jazz, classical, and such.
Also, try to always pracice in the correct form and timing (I've heard that the correct timing is what makes a song sound really good). Even if you have to play really slow at first, it's still better.
Another thing you can do is try to be around guitarists, and watch guitar videos, read about guitar playing, getting the right tone, and everything about guitar. It all really helps.
There's one last thing that's more important than everything I've already said. I know it's a cliche, but PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. If you want to get good fast, this is really the only way.
If you have any specific questions about how to do certain things or what guitar to buy, just ask.
Rock on.
