I would suggest first learning on acoustic guitar. Listen to many guitarists, and learn scales, chords, and intervals like mad. After maybe a year (give or take some) you could start working more on just rock guitar. One of the books I started with was by Troy Stetina. Much after that, to hone in on your craft, I would suggest learning how to play many different types of music - blues, jazz, classical, and such.
Also, try to always pracice in the correct form and timing (I've heard that the correct timing is what makes a song sound really good). Even if you have to play really slow at first, it's still better.
Another thing you can do is try to be around guitarists, and watch guitar videos, read about guitar playing, getting the right tone, and everything about guitar. It all really helps.
There's one last thing that's more important than everything I've already said. I know it's a cliche, but PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. If you want to get good fast, this is really the only way.

If you have any specific questions about how to do certain things or what guitar to buy, just ask.
Rock on.

Yeah DefLep is absolutley right. And one thing i can tell you and that wil REALLy help is to hang out with other guitarists. Try to meet other persons that have the same passion like you. This will really help. And if in your antourage there are other guitarists keep asking them questions about what you need. They are the best persons who can help you. And here in the forum we are really happy to help you. And before you begin you must have something very clear in your head and be sure that it's true : the amount of time you spend on learning and practicing will be reflected in your playing :)
If you have any problems questions ask us. i am sure there will always be a person in this forum who will be able to help you

OK there's only one point that DefLep mentioned and i think that ist's not necesarely good. DefLep said to learn 'scales as mad'. of course this depends on how much time you spend on scales, but if you sped too much time on learning them, your solos and inmprovisation will sound the same like going up-down using scales. But once again, this is will not happend necesarely. instead i would say to learn as much licks as you can and as DefLep said not only from one style but from many styles. This way you will develop a great amount of different types of licks and you will be able to cover more styles.

I guess I meant that it is good to know the scales and notes so when you need to use them you can. It's actually a tip I read in an interview with Matthias a while back, and I found my improvisation improved once I followed this advice.

Yeah DefLep ! Don't get me wrong ! Scales are the most important thing to know before starting to improvise. I just meant that a player should not get TOO much into scales and do nothing but this ...
