does Mathias do any tapping in his solos? witch solo would that be?
Is he a legatto player or an alternate picker?

He uses these techniques, and more (trem bar, sweep harmonics, this late times on stage sweep picking.)

In general Matthias combines a bit of both alternate picking and legatto, but he's more a legatto adept. Matthias was never a big tapping fan, he rarely does tapping a la Van Halen (the only part where i can remember that he does tapping is on Can't live without you solo), instead he does some tapp harmonics (he frets a note and taps over the 5th,7th or 12th fret to create nice harmonics). He ocassionally messes around with natural harmonics and sometimes he plays pinch harmonics. As Rot mentioned, he likes to play with the whammy bar. And talking about his sweeping ........ i'd better keep my comments for me ...

He uses some tapped slides in the beginning of the Hurricane's solo.

I found Matthias was more of a gut type of player over a technician or a Flashy trickster.

His playing is a little more thought out than just sweeping blinding arpeggios etc.

I like his style and was quite infulenced when I first saw them back in 81/82?? Too long ago to remember which

Obviously now I'm a pro guitarist in my own right I'd blow him off the stage I'm so good....and really modest too!!!

Cheers
